Yes, I have been negligent . . .

Okay, it has been awhile. BUT, I will now attempt repentance and try to bring everyone up to speed on the Matheson Family doings in what will probably take several posts!
As the last pictures posted were of Dance Recital, it is now important to discuss The Music Man as Dance Recital happened in between performances of it! Tacey once again played Amaryllis, and I am pleased to say she is finally coming to understand her Mom does have a bit of knowledge in the whole 'Theatre Area'. She let me coach her a bit this time, and has definately improved as an actress! We didn't really get pictures of the event, except for this important one:

Amaryllis trying to kiss Winthrop! Heh heh heh. Poor Sam Gold. After that, the next major event was graduation. Is Tacey really that old you ask? Nope, shes not: which is a good thing as that would reflect on my age in a way I don't really want it to! It was MY graduation. Just to remind everyone of all the 'drama' (pun intended) -

I went back to school to get my Master's in Theatre. I really enjoyed it and found out a few things about myself. First of all; I am SMART! Second; I have really original creative ideas! And third; I am exceptionally good at what I do. All of this led to two years of totally enjoyable work, a 4.0 and a snapped achilies tendon! I was supposed to graduate LAST May, but I took one final Thesis credit in the summer so that I had a little more time to finish it. I made this decision back in January, thinking with the number of shows I intended on doing, it would be a good thing to take a little more time. Then, I had to deal with the whole snapped-tendon-surgery thing in the middle of the semester, so that turned out to be a VERY good thing on my part. I am SO glad I listened to my little inner voice. I was all set to walk Commencement in August, but then found out they had cancelled it. I was ANGRY. So, to sum it all up in not a few words: I did graduate in August, I have had the Diploma in my hands since October to prove it, I paid $85.00 for an ill-fitting uni-sex black dress with dumb sleeves (THATS a whole different story), a hat that looks good on no one with a hangy thing (that said the wrong year), and a weird scarf so I could get the holder for the Diploma! Here is the very important man that PAID for that little piece of paper! About the weird sleeves: I put on my graduation robe when my Mom was here for Laura's graduation. As I did so, my hand went to the bottom of the sleeve and got stuck! I looked at my Mom, angry that I had been given a defective robe with one sleeve sewn shut! I put my hand in the other sleeve and you know what? SAME THING! Then my mom noticed it did have arm holes and the end of the sleeve was supposed to dangle off my forearm, not stop at my wrist. I would feel really dumb about this (I DO have my Master's and all), except that as I stood in line for the procession, someone commented thay had the same experience and as we took a poll: everyone originally thought they had a defective robe. Now your looking at the picture to see the weird sleeves, aren't you? I guess part of getting your Master's is learning to 'Master' the funny robe!

My Dad, Grandma and JoAnne came up for the event; that was AMAZINGLY too long. I heard other people in the Master's Section talking about how they were going to walk the line then keep going and walk out of the arena. I swear, when I get my Doctorate, I am doing just that!!! Shane held in until the very end. Hope he feels he got his money's worth!

Dad, me, Grandma!

My Dad also threw me a Graduation Party that was hosted and catered by my cousin Xochithl. This meant he went to the nearest store to help buy supplies. He saw the chocolate, and thought of me. Dallin thought that was a pretty good idea!

Xochie's house was a good choice; it came complete with a big backyard, a trampoline, a hammock, lots of cousins to play with and PUPPIES! Mac spent alot of time with the cute little guys (so did JoAnne for that matter. . . ) There were also light saber battles to be fought Some of them with Uncle Cuauhtemoc And a hammock to make the puppies stay where you wanted them and swing gently on in the nice weather!

Thanks Xochie!

While we were occupied with graduation, we also had a production most of us (Me, Tacey & McCade) were involved in. I wrote and directed a production based on the Anansi Folk Tales with a friend of mine to serve as a cultural experience for the kids at the school I teach at as well as a fundraiser for the PTO. It was a big success; making a good deal of money for the organization and presenting the kids with experiences that managed to shock the school councilor. (In a good way. . .). Here's cute little cast. By little I mean they were all young; there was a TON of them.

Tacey was the Assistant Director and McCade played several parts. There were several stories, so everyone got a chance to find a minute to shine. This particular one was 'Anansi and the Turtle'.

That's Mac as Anansi. Anansi is a spider.

This is Mac attempting to 'jump into the pool of water' to eat dinner with Turtle. Mac really liked the whole trampoline thing; I knew he would (hehe). He (Anansi) was too light to sink to the bottom so he had to fill the pockets of his jacket with rocks.

Then turtle yelled at him for wearing his jacket at the table. Sounds kinda mean when you don't know the whole story, but Anansi really desreved it. He had treated Turtle badly earlier in the story. This one is called 'Anansi and the Liar's Contest'. Mac played a fly in this one. He told a lie about how he had beaten a Tiger by flying down her mouth and grabbing the end of her tail and spinning her around and around until she was so dizzy she fell down. All in all, it was a good experience! I was also preoccupied by a nest of baby robins that were growing up before our eyes in the carport. The Mom Bird built 3 nests in all, finally deciding she liked the last one. She laid three eggs and would yell at me whenever I went outside to see how they were doing. (I didn't touch them, just held up a mirror so I could see in what I THOUGHT was a non-evasive way). I got in this habit after I went out there and was CERTAIN that one of the babies was dead. I called Shane, who was out of town, and told him about it. He asked me if I had touched it, to which I replied 'EWWWW! NOOOOO!'. He tried to convince me it was asleep. I wouldn't believe him. I mean, COME ON! What bird sleeps with it's head rolled back and mouth open? It totally looked dead! But nope, it was just sleeping; Shane was right. I was relieved. Who knew baby birds played dead so well? Not me, that's for sure! One day I went out, and there were only two. I was SO sad. I thought the little guy had fallen out of the nest and was going to starve. I went out again later and there was only one and the second guy was one the ground, standing there looking at me. 10 minutes later, number three was also gone. I assumed it must be 'flying day'. I hope they all made it, but as is wise to do with many things, I just let nature take its course.

Summer also means that we spend time with Jarrett and Cole. Our summer activities started with lunch, a trip to the library, a walk along the river to feed to ducks and a trip to Reed's Dairy for Ice Cream. There were also lots of baby 'things' there; baby ducks, baby geese and baby bugs of many biting varities.

Dallin McCade . . . and everyone!
And of cource, Baseball and Softball were in full swing (pun also intended there!)
Dallin and McCade played on the same team, Tacey is playing on two separate teams. They took official team pictures, and I have video, but blogger isn't cooperating right now. I PROMISE it will take me less time to post those!

On that note. . . More to come later!!!

Lots to post. . .

I feel like I have been running, and running and running. Actually, I have. Really! I got distracted one day while I was on the treadmill at the gym; the treadmills have these cool little TVs in them and you can watch cable TV or see/hear anything on your iPod. I was watching 'Fun With Dick and Jane' starring Jim Carrey & Tea Leoni. Just over an hour later I realized I had walked/run so far, so fast I had actually managed to give myself BLISTERS on my feet. Good going Danielle. . .
April 3rd was the music concert for the 5th graders I teach at the local Elementary School. Their program was 'The Sounds of the 60's'. We did a bunch of fun songs and I surprised them with a LIVE band there to play for them. They thought they we going to have CD accompaniment, but nope! Real musicians. It was a TON of fun! I don't have any pictures because I was too busy waving my arms and running around like a crazy woman, and Shane was out of town.
Let's see, what else . . . for those of you that follow this blog, April 4th was the 1yr anniversary of my infamous 'last leap'. Yep, that leap that snapped the 'ol achilies tendon. That was also the day Grandpa Warner died. I spent April 4th this year at home, very quietly. I didn't want a repeat; I wonder if that particular day is cursed for me now. It may or may not, but after last year, I was NOT about to take any chances! It did leave me some time for some introspection. I hate the lack of control I feel like I have over my body. It is weird, I am in both the best and worst shape of my life at the same time. *sigh*. I have been so frustrated with just learning stupid things like learning to walk, and jog, and the thought of dancing again fills me with such fear my eyes fill up with tears. I don't feel the same need to perform in public. Although, the few times I have, I thought "Wow, I guess I am good at this - I had forgotten!". I am just basically frustrated with my WHOLE body in general. Funny how a little thing like an achilies tendon can change your whole perspective and rid you of all confience.
Anyhoo. . . on to better things. We have been doing alot recently. (Big surprise, huh?)
We love our doggie, Koda. He is SO funny. He likes to sleep UNDER a blanket, not on it. This is not an uncommon sight in our house.Sometimes I wonder if his backside is a heat regulator. And a snoring blanket is ALWAYS funny.
April 10th was a BIG day. First, we had surprise visitors from California arrive the night before. Shane & I knew they were coming, Tacey did too since she had to let them borrow her room. I had Laura thinking I was going to go to her graduation the morning of the 10th, but INSTEAD of seeing me as she came running in, she got to see her MOMMY AND DADDY!!!! I didn't get to go, but I tons of other things to do that day. But that explains my lack of pictures. However, any of you who know my sister Laura know that she had an AWESOME reaction complete with tears and everything. It made me happy to know it was happening, even though I couldn't be there. It was a good surprise, and personally, I think I should get the Sister-of-the-year award for it! Oh, and I am DEFINITELY not going to heaven now. Why you ask? Because you have to be without sin, right? Well, I just told a BUNCH of lies, and I can't repent for them because I DON'T FEEL BAD AT ALL! Then that night I had the rest of the music concerts. Yep, same night, back to back. First was the third graders. Their concert was titled 'The Silliness of Me!'. We did all sorts of funny, silly songs, and ended with a couple of my favorite songs from musicals; 'Green Eggs & Ham' from Seussical, and 'Happiness' from You're A Good Man Charlie Brown.
I am really glad I had things to think about during the concerts OTHER than the fact so many people were looking at my backside. McCade is right there by my left hand.
Those are not bad shields; they are plates with pictures of Green Eggs & Ham on them. That was my way of keeping them on their hands while they danced.
Aren't they just cute? The fourth grade sang songs about America. I had kept a small group of the kids after school for a few weeks, and they formed an 'Honor Choir'. I taught them harmonies, descants and alternate parts to their songs. HA! I rock! 4th graders singing in HARMONY! Did I mention I bought the entire 4th grade Kazoos? Yep, a bit of insanity that had an amazing payoff! I was disturbed at how many kids didn't know what a kazoo was, not to mention the fact they had no idea how to play it!

I loved my little Honor Choir!

Grandma and Grandpa in town made for even better Easter fun. It is nice now that the kids are getting older; we concentrate more on the real reason for Easter. But we do enjoy our Cadbury Eggs!Dallin finding an egg.McCade not able to find anything - even the marshmallow bunnies right by his hand! The troops showing their 'stuff'. Happily they were just as excited that they had new clothes to wear to church.

The following Wednesday was a VERY BIG DAY! Once again, the Pinewood Derby! There is not another day in the calendar year more stressful for Shane. Oh, he didn't sleep for two days working his hiney off to come back home to be here for the races. It's a good thing too! I don't know graphite from glue, and wouldn't know how to put wheels on car. Shane was elected to run the track. It is a VERY serious business, this Pinewood Derby. This is the board with the heats and results. In case you couldn't see in the other picture; these are the final standings.

WHOO HOO! Two boys, Two cars, First and Second places, ONE VERY HAPPY DAD!Dallin and the winning car!McCade and the car that gave Dallin's a run for the money! All our Cub Scouts and their cars. It was a fun night!

That Friday Tacey opened in another production of 'The Music Man'. She is again playing Amaryllis. Pictures to come later. . .

Then on Saturday we went to see 'Monsters vs. Aliens.' The 3D was REALLY good, but we had seen this level of 3D before. However, Tacey was upset over a sign as you walked into the theatre.I think the movie was the longest she had gone without texting in a long time. I swear, that girl even texts in her sleep.

Then this week we had another VERY big night in the Matheson house; Dance Recital. I know there are requirements in every household. Around here most people require all their children to play the piano. In our house, it is dance. And on a nice Thursday night we had Dance Recital. The boys are the best male dancers their age, and actually in a class by themselves. I mean that both literally and figuratively.

On stage and ready to go!
Tacey after the recital. She had 5 classes so I don't even try to take pictures anymore. I'll scan in the ones I paid for later. . .This is Tacey and her Ballroom partner; Jace. I think he is totally cool! He was fun, had rhythm and was a good dancer! They plan on dancing together again next year. Lots of dance classes means lots of costume changes and lots of stuff to carry.
Cute girls in some of her classes; Kaydee, Abbi and Skye.
Friday brought the school talent show. This was the second year she was chosen to participate. She sang the Eva Cassidy version of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow'. It is a VERY hard song; I don't think anyone understood how very hard it was. She did really well; we are very proud of her. They let the kids vote and won't be posting 'Winners' until Monday. We aren't holding our breath; with the kids voting it is sure to be more of a popularity contest than anything else. We are content to know she did VERY well.
I think that is it! Music Man and dance class pictures to come; baseball practice started today!
We will still be running!

April Fool's - we're a TRICKY bunch!

Okay, so McCade wanted to use his brother's walking cast/boot for April Fool's. I wasn't really comfortable with that - afraid he would ACTUALLY hurt himself while wearing it. He then said, 'Man! I wish I could have a black eye or something!' Well . . . THAT I can do! So this morning I pulled out my stage make up and spent maybe 2 minutes giving him a removable black eye. Tacey saw what was up and said 'I want a black eye too!'. Another black eye was soon available. I worked at McCade's school today, and got to witness some of the reaction to his 'injury'. His teacher saw him walking down that hall, and was VERY concerned about his eye. She truly bought it. The school counselor started to drill me about what happened until we started laughing. After all his friends believed his black eye, his teacher sent him and his friend to the office to see the Principal for 'fighting'. Those boys sat there all somber, and the principal got ready to 'get to the bottom' of the story when the other boy started to giggle. Soon McCade yelled 'April Fools!'. His teacher was disappointed they broke so quickly - third graders - go figure! His teacher spent the day tricking all the other teachers with McCade. So, this made for a VERY good day for McCade.
Tacey also had great success with her black eye. All of her friends and teachers believed it. She had SO many people telling her their black eye stories - it was also very good fun. She had her friends going and told them she truly had no idea how she got her black eye - she said she must have 'blacked out'. Everyone bought it. So she also had a good day!
So, in more ways than I can count, and more ways than I EVER anticipated; my theatre training has has a VERY positive effect on my life and the lives of those around me!!!!!
I tried to take pictures of my artwork, but they didn't turn out. You will jst have to take our word for it - and that IS NOT part of the April Fool.

Happiness!

The real end of Basketball and other frozen treats

Okay, so we have been on Spring Break all week, and for 'not having anything to do' my 'list of things to accomplish' has not seemed much shorter. HOWEVER, I did get a lot of stuff accomplished - I think. Shane has been gone a lot, and the weather has been HORRIBLE - to say the least. I really don't think you should call it 'Spring Break' when it is 19 degrees and there is snow everywhere. That kind of Spring Break makes Moms crazy as the kids are trapped inside. At least at Christmas they have new stuff mess with!
I finished writing the Elementary School play; that was a project. I also planned all other aspects of the show - costumes, set, lights, music, choreography, so I can just show up and do my thing with the new, short actors.
Tacey kept up her busy evening schedule, but it will be lighter as she had her last Basketball game last night. This Tacey making faces at, and generally annoying our neighbor Matt. They play intimidation ball in the driveway ALL THE TIME, so this is nothing new. We were happily disappointed that Tacey did not almost kill Matt like she did last time she played him. He went to stuff her during a layup and she ducked and turned, forcing him into an airborne position parallel to the ground. At least he has a hard head. I think he is fully recovered - even his pride. I can't say her team was amazing scorers, but if they gave points for fun, determination, and hitting the rim - they would have totally kick everyone's butts. Now she is just down to her 5 dance classes and the school musical. But be aware - Softball starts soon!
We also got to play with Hayley a lot this week. I forgot to take pictures - we were having too much fun playing. We painted her toe nails. She tried to wipe it off with a rag. She also has an appetite for cell phones.
Dallin & McCade have just been hanging. Actually, the next thing on my list is to have them plan their Pinewood Derby cars. I am excited because I think this is the first year I have not had a rehearsal I COULD NOT get out of. SOOOOOOO...... I will get to go! Now, Shane does not look forward to this as I am - since he gets to build two cars. (Unfortunately, someone always has to lose.)
We had Blue & Gold Banquet last month. It was, and always is, interesting to try and make two different cakes. Not to mention the cake consumption that must go on for the following week. This year the theme was 'ABC's of America'. Dallin decided to make the famous 'Don't Tread On Me' flag. I think it was because I had mentioned I saw a 3 foot long Gummi snake at the Army Surplus store. (I was there getting hand and foot warmers for the movie thing). So, really he did this whole cake himself. He helped significantly with the baking and did all the decorating himself. McCade and I talked about it and we made cupcakes. (I don't want to eat anything a bunch of cub scouts have been cutting themselves and using their hands to scoop up - YUK!). Then I used white chocolate chips for the stars (I might as well throw out the left-overs. We NEVER eat white chocolate). and fruit roll up for the stripes. We did this because I am too lazy and too uptight to have stripes that aren't straight.
And of course, we didn't forget McCade's birthday - the big 0-9! This is the last year any of my kids will have only one candle on their cake. *sigh*.

And finally, a picture of the boy's Basketball team. Gotta love 3rd & 4Th graders!
No, they don't play at a jail; just the equivalent - a Junior High School.
Happy Spring?

Is there anything to update?

I dunno, we have just been running around like we always do. Shane has been gone due to his current change in occupational status, I finished one of my FAVORITE shows to do in Pocatello on Friday. I also auditioned and cast a play for 3rd, 4th & 5th graders at the Elementary School. Now I just have to write it. Thank goodness for Spring Break. Dallin and McCade are done with Basketball, but up to their ears in Scouts and looking forward to baseball. They also have dance recital soon. Tacey has one basketball game left, dance recital coming up soon (she has 5 classes) as well as the District Musical. She also wants to run track, and will be playing her last year of city softball this year.

On friday I got the opportunity to play Catherine Scott Murphy Harkness again. This is her picture.

Isn't her dress AWESOME?!?! This part was given to me by my good friend and Mentor, Jamie Romine. She received a grant from the Idaho Humanities Council to write a show about the women who were influential and consequential in the settlement of this area. Catherine was an Irish immigrant who married an abusive alcoholic. He brought her west from New York when he received tariffs the build and operate toll roads in Southeast Idaho. He finally beat her so badly one night that he was arrested and taken to trial. While on trial he was waving his gun, hit his attorney on the head with a book and ran from the courtroom. He was told to stop, but didn't and was shot and killed by the Sheriff. Catherine then ran the tolls with the help of a man who her abusive husband had hired to run one of the tolls. This is an amazing feat for any woman, but especially an irish immigrant woman in the late 1800's. She then married the manager and built a ranch, sawmill and boarding house. She was an amazing woman, and I am honored to play her EVERYTIME! I hope to meet her in heaven someday. . . and I hope I do her justice.

I am putting together a script of Anansi tales for the Elementary School kids, but I am at a loss for musical numbers. I am hoping my creative block will soon lift. McCade will be in this show. This is not nepotism - he honestly had an amazing audition. At least I have all of Spring Break to work on it - along with the taxes, and cub scouts with the boys. I guess I won't get much rest. Especially since I am going to make the kids clean their rooms; which are atrocious! I had been enjoying evening walks with the doggie and one of the kids (they unintentionally rotated so I got quality time with each of them), but today it decided to go from a tolerable 60 degrees to SNOWING!!! Ugh - so sick of snow. I dread next winter. I never want to drive in snow - NEVER, EVER again.

I bought my cap, gown, tassle and hood to walk the line the other day. It is a little surreal to finally walk the line the begining of May as I graduated in August and received my diploma in October (via mail). However, ISU only has commencement once a year, so I had to wait until this May to walk the line and get the snazzy diploma holder. I sometimes wonder why I am going through all the hoopla, it seems like unecessary stress and a waste of time. But at the same time, I did work very hard and I am proud of my accomplishments. My Dad is coming out to watch, and I suppose it will be good for the kids to see what I expect from them in the future.

On another random note - the doggie had himself another all night party. He is IMPOSSIBLE to catch when he gets out at night as he is the color of dark. He broke his collar and was gone for 11 hours. I think it is funny he knocks on the door when he decides to come home. He was so tired. I kept him up for another hour just to make him suffer for the all worrying I did and all the tears and fears I had to calm in the kids - not to mention the time chasing him in the dark. Ugh. He didn't like it, but oh well.

I am currently trying to decide if my schedule allows for me to direct a production of 'A Midsummers Night Dream' in Pocatello. If time allows, I think I am going to do a weird concept and pull it out of Shakesperean time and put it in gangster-Chicago. I dunno - it is still just an idea - it hasn't quite solidified yet.

On a somber side note, one of my former students had a baby this week who has some severe problems. If you have an opportunity, please visit grantmeaheart.blogspot.com and learn about Alli and little Grant. I would appreciate it if you would keep their family in your prayers.

Now I have saved you all a rambling phone call from me - instead you got a rambling blog!

Love to you all!

Danielle

Quotes for the week. . .

Dallin
vs.
McCade

Round One

Dallin: I am going to be rich when I grow up.
McCade: No you're not, I'M going to be rich when I grow up!
Dallin: Well, I am smart, and smart people get all the good jobs and make all the money. I am going to be rich when I grow up.
McCade: I am going to be rich because I am SOOOO Good Looking!

Round Two
(Upon receiveing their paychecks for their recent extra work in the movie 'Snowmen'.)

Dallin: Hey! I thought I made $92.00! Why is my check only for $80.87?
McCade: Well, now I am going to do what all working men do: scratch my butt, then sit on it and play video games.

Yep. Put a STOP to that opinion VERY quickly.

Oh, to be a Movie Star

Well, the last several weeks have been busy. More basketball, and basketball and basketball. Tacey began practice for her coed team, which added to her already busy schedule. Things should get really interesting when she starts rehearsal for the district musical. On the up side, by then I will be done with the musical I am directing so I will be home more. We are in the last two weeks. It is both stressful and exciting.
Here are some recent fun basketball pictures. . .

This is Dallin dribbling. I am not quite sure why McCade has his arms straight up in the air, but that is him behind Dallin. He is the only kid I know who purposely wears a long sleeve shirt to play basketball *whatever*.
This is one of two free throws McCade shot AND MADE! Pretty cool.
One of the few moments they are both out of the game. They look like brothers who actually get along in this picture.
The OTHER exciting stuff happened over Valentines weekend. We left Shelley Thursday night to go to Salt Lake City because the boys had been scheduled to be extras in a MOVIE! The working title is 'Snowmen', I heard that it is being produced by Mirage, and should have a PG rating. I don't know if that means it will be in theatres or go straight to video, but we had fun and learned alot. Most of all it was a long, cold day. We were outside filming in sub-freezing weather from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. BRRRRRRR. I thought 'Certainly they won't keep 9, 10 & 11 yr-old kids outside all day in this weather'. But, they did. Our only relief cam from sitting in a school bus. I had bought hand and foot warmers. I am SO glad I did. They really saved us.
Those two kids on the end in the black and gray coat with the blue stripe and the blue and black coat are McCade and Dallin, respectively.
This is from the top of the field they were shooting in. That tent is the tent the director stood in while filming was taking place. There were about 25-30 hired extras that day. However, for this particular scene, they pulled the 5th grade out of the school back there. They did alot of semi-choreographed cheering and running. All of these shots were for about 4 lines in the movie. They had at least 5 different cameras/camera angles they used and did each one about 5 times. It was tedious, tedious work. The kids were really cold. They were troopers on film, but alot of the extra kids were crying when they finally got done with this particular scene.About then, craft service showed up with Hot Chocolate and snacks. That was a good thing. This is Mac with one of the prop 'Snowmen'.Dallin with the same 'Snowman'.This is the field of 'Snowmen' the kids 'built' later in the day. They are made out of foam. It was funny to see all these fake snowmen in a field full of real snow. They sprayed all the 'Snowmen' with water and then sprinkled real snow on them. They also piled up real snow along the bottom to help them look real. This is Dallin resting and getting warm(?) on the bus while playing his PSP.McCade can't sit still - even in the cold. He played in the snow ALL DAY.This is the boys and all the other extras building their fake snowmen. That is Dallin all the way on the right. McCade is in the middle about 3 kids away from Dallin.
We were scheduled to work the next day, except we had a car accident on the way there. I am not going to say much, mainly because I am still upset about it. Lets start by saying NO ONE got hurt - except the car; it may totalled. I have officially given up even attempting to drive in snow. Shane must find a job that allows me to have a personal driver between November and March.

Hopefully the movie will be a success -

Danielle
