Begining of the Month Madness

Well, it was a week, but isn't EVERY week 'a week'? We had some cool things start the seek. McCade got 100% on his math test, Dallin got 100% on a literature test and on his math vocabulary test and Tacey got 100% on her math quiz and her health test. We were crusin'! Tacey had LOTS of cross country and dance team practice, Dallin had LOTS of football practice and scouts, and McCade had scouts. We made all our various commitments, and Thursday we were four different places. McCade was at scouts, Tacey was at dance (after cross country), Shane was still in D.C. and I went with Dallin to his football game.
Waiting for the Pre-game huddle and warm-ups.

Meeting with the coach before the game. See the kid with the 'X' on his helmet? Grid Kid is split up not only by grade level, but also by weight. You cannot play on a 5th grade team if you weigh over 125 lbs, and you can't play Defense if you weight over 115 lbs. They weigh each kid in before each game, and give 3 lbs for scale calibration, so if the scale says over 128 you don't play and if it says over 118 you can't play defense, only offense. If they have an X on their helmet, they can only play offense. We have 2 boys on the team that are 'X'ed. One of them REALLY wants to play defense and his dad is one of the coaches. Most of the time weight is not an issue, so the kids jump on the scale in full pads and helmets. Lets face it, most 5th graders don't tip the scale of 80 -85 lbs! This poor kid had all his shoulder pads and helmet off, was still over 118, took off his shoes, was still over 118 and ended up down to his boxer-briefs trying to make the lower weight. In the end, the scale still said 119.5 so he could only play offense. I felt bad for him standing there in public in the middle of the park in only his underware. He wanted to play defense SO badly he was begging 'Let me go pee! I have to pee really BAD! If I pee I am SURE I can make it!'. Oh, the things we strange humans do!

Warm-ups!

During the game

The huddle after the game.

I actually can give you a blow-by-blow of the game because I texted the game to Shane! I can't take full credit for the text contents, I still don't know what some of them mean, but I had good help.

The game started at 6:00. We were defense first.

6:17 - Fumble, our ball, 25 yard-ish.

6:19 - Touchdown Shelley

6:20 - no extra point.

6:22 - recovered our own kick. offense again. hahahahahaha.

6:24 - line of coaches from the other team's end zone watching. (That is because Shelley, and especially Dallin's coach always makes it to the playoffs. Dallin's coach has been coaching Grid Kid Football for 14 years and he has lost exactly 1 game.)

6:24 - beautiful 40 yard successful pass, 15 yd line.

6:26 - 2:27 til half.

6:28 - 4th down.

6:32 - 4th down then coach called timeout.

6:34 - kick recovery on the 35 yd. line.

6:35 - 1st Down

6:35 - sacked our QB. :-(

6:41 - half. 13-6 us.

6:56 - Quarterback sack, 4th down. Their ball.

6:58 - touchdown them

7:12 - end of third quarter

7:26 - we fumbled on like the 5. OUR 5. We might lose.

7:27 - trying to hold them

7:28 - 4th down

7:29 - stopped them, we have the ball

7:31 - game called. win for Shelley 13-12.

This was a new thing for me. I hadn't seen players cheer for each other like this. That's Dallin there - number 38. In the end they won 13-12. So both games, the one this week and the one last Saturday, had tough endings but in the end they were victorious. If they can keep this up, they will make the playoff and get to play even more games!

Friday Shane got to come home, but then we hit the ground hard and running on Saturday. We left at 8:00 Saturday morning, and went to Soda Spring for a Cross Country meet. Where we stood we were near the Finish line, but still got to see her run by twice before her final sprint.

First pass.
Second Pass.
Final Sprint. She sprints twice as far as everyone else. That is her in the white shirt. She has just passed three other girls.
Passing another one.
And another one. It is funny to watch their faces as she goes speeding by.
Home Stretch.
The Finish. Her Cross Country T-Shirt says 'How Does My Dust Taste?'
I have to say Tacey has a weird, although healthy, attitude about Cross Country. She likes it, but she really doesn't care if she ever runs in a meet. She likes to run and get in shape, and be part of the team, but she doesn't have an overwhelming desire to win. We have learned this year that she is much better at short distances and is very fast over the short lengths. She has decided she is going to try Track this spring and look at becoming a sprinter.

Have a WONDERFUL Labor Day, and a fantastic week!

Danielle

P.S. If you read this Blog, and you know and LOVE my sister Laura, you need to contact her and get the full story, but poor little Haley broke her arm Friday night. There will be in-depth commentary about this, but NOT until there is a little more distance from the event. You will see why later. . .

Poor little Haley. This brings back SO many memories of when Dallin broke his arm when he was 8 months old. He tripped when learning to walk, (he was trying to walk on the bed. He fell ON the bed, so I didn't thnk he had hurt himself, but I found out a few days later he had a buckle fracture. ) Dallin was supposed to be in his cast 6 weeks, but after 6 weeks they proclaimed it still needed more healing time, then after 8 weeks they still felt it needed more healing time, and at 10 weeks they let him out of the thing but managed to burn him taking it off and left him with a scar. He still likes to show it off - but not as much as the one in his hair when he ripped the side of his scalp off and had to get staples. We hope poor little Haley has better luck than Dallin did! Her poor little arm has clean breaks between both of the forearm bones and she will be seeing a specialist on Tuesday (because of the holiday). We LOOOOOVVVVVEEEE you Bop!
